T&A UXO Academy

T&A Survey has been providing UXO training courses for various certificates for more than 10 years. Several hundreds of students have followed a course with us and passed the exam successfully. We provide training courses for individuals and for companies in both Dutch and English. Our expert course leaders have many years of theoretical and practical experience in the field of detecting and approaching UXO.

T&A provides the theoretical training and practical preparation for the exams for the following certificates:    

As a WSCS-OCE certified company, T&A Suvey is a member the UXO Examination Foundation (Stichting Examinering OCE), the central and independent institute for UXO exams.

For whom?
Companies or organizations can be confronted with UXO for various reasons. People performing supportive activities in the UXO work area, without participating in the actual investigation process, such as drivers, excavators and supervisors, must have the Basic Knowledge UXO (Basiskennis OCE) certificate.

Content
The Basic Knowledge UXO level includes:   
  • basic knowledge about explosives & UXO,   
  • basic knowledge about the approach and implementation of projects according to the WSCS-OCE legislation,   
  • knowing and correctly applying safety rules to UXO projects.

This course will give you a thorough preparation for the exam. The instructor will go through all test terms with you and, where necessary, provide explanations and practical examples.

Course duration
The training and the exam take place on the same day. The Basic Knowledge OCE exam consists of a theory exam of 25 multiple choice questions.

For whom?
If you want to become a professional in the UXO branche, you will have to start as an Assistant UXO expert. The emphasis of this level of expertise is on performing UXO detection. The Assistant UXO expert always works under the direct supervision and responsibility of the UXO expert. An exception to this is non-real-time detection. Under certain conditions this may be performed (see WSCS-OCE) by two Assistant OCE experts. The candidate does not have to be in the posession of the Basic Knowledge UXO certificate.

Content
The course covers different detection methods, with the emphasis on metal detection. Participants are made familiar with the basic concepts and detection methods. Theory and practice are alternated. At the end of the course you will have the basic knowledge of:   
  • explosive substances,   
  • ammunition recognition (16 main groups),   
  • interpretation of measurement data,   
  • localization and layer-by-layer excavation of UXO,   
  • excavation,   
  • identification and securing.

The Assistant UXO Expert exam consists of three parts:   
  1. theory exam consisting of multiple choice questions;   
  2. practical exam consisting of 2 assignments (surface and/or depth detection);   
  3. UXO recognition, consisting of a field recognition part and a photo recognition part (recognition by main type).

Location
The course  can take place at the T&A Survey office in Amsterdam or, if desired and sufficient participants, at the client's location. The exam takes place at the UXO Examination Foundation (Stichting Examinering OCE) in Meteren.


For whom?
The UXO expert exam is only accessible if you are in the posession of an Assistant UXO expert certificate. In addition, the candidate must have at least two years of project experience as an Assistant UXO expert. This experience, including the various components of the UXO investigation process, has be demonstrable. The UXO expert is responsible for approaching and identifying UXO and temporarily securing the situation. He is assited by the Assistant OCE expert. The Senior UXO expert always has the final responsibility. He or she is always present at the project location and can be on site quickly in case of questions/uncertainties.

Content
The UXO expert level includes:   
  • recognition, approach and identification of UXO,   
  • temporarily securing the situation,   
  • basic knowledge regarding the handling of (other) substances and objects in the subsurface and the relevant legislation and regulations.

The UXO expert exam consists of the following three parts:   
  1. theory exam consisting of multiple choice questions and some open questions about the functioning and composition of UXO;   
  2. practical exam consisting of 2 assignments on detection with approach, the identification of UXO and the interpretation of measurement data;  
  3. UXO identification, consisting of a field identification and a photo identification plus a motivated advice for securing the UXO.

Duration, costs and data
On request, depending on level, experience and group size.

Location
The course  can take place at the T&A Survey office in Amsterdam or, if desired and sufficient participants, at the client's location. The exam takes place at the UXO Examination Foundation (Stichting Examinering OCE) in Meteren.

For whom?
The Senior UXO expert leads the UXO team and is responsible for all mandatory administration according to the WSCS-OCE legislation. He/she is also involved in the preparation of project plans, the assessment of the preliminary investigations, the interpretation of detection data and the development of new survey methods.

The Senior UXO expert exam is only accessible if you ar in the posession of the UXO expert certificate. In addition, the candidate must have at least three years of experience as an UXO expert. Experience with the various components of the investigation process in this period has to be demonstrated.

Content
The senior UXO expert level includes:   
  • interpretation of (digital) measurement data,   
  • additional ammunition recognition (pre- and postwar),   
  • basic principles of detonation,   
  • project preparation,   
  • project management.   
  • project communication.

The exam for the Senior UXO expert consists of the following three components:   
  1. theory exam consisting of multiple choice questions and some open questions about the operation and composition of UXO, laws and regulations;   
  2. practical exam consisting of 2 assignments on detection with approach, the identification of UXO and the interpretation of measurement data;   
  3. UXO identification, consisting of a field identification  and a photo identification (including explosieves from before and after WWII) and giving motivated advice for securing the CE.
