Environmental research

Environmental research maps possible pollution of the subsurface and waterbottom. If necessary, the health and risks of soil pollution are determined and the ground contaminants are then removed. In the same field as environmental soil research lies the research, which determines whether the soil material can be (re)used as building material.

Fieldwork is carried out by external qualified and fully certified fieldwork bureaus. The chemical analyses are conducted by qualified laboratories.

T&A's approach:
  • Innovative techniques for research and remediation.
  • Part of a network of specialised companies.
  • Multidisciplinary approach makes time and cost effective solutions possible.
  • Combination of environmental and non-destructive geophysical research.
  • T&A is well known regionally and has good access to archives, government services and authorities.

Preliminary soil investigation

Environmental soil research aims to identify soil contamination. The research consists of several steps.

Preliminary research

The preliminary investigation is based on NEN 5725 and determines what suspicious activities may have taken place at and near the research location.

Exploratory soil investigation

After the preliminary investigation, an exploratory soil investigation according to NEN 5740 (or the ARVO within Amsterdam) may be necessary. The exploratory soil survey gives an overall picture of the environmental quality of the soil.

Further soil investigation and remediation

If a contamination is found during the exploratory soil investigation, further soil investigation must be carried out. In this investigation we will determine the extent and seriousness of the contamination. The extent and seriousness of the detected contamination can lead to the decision for soil remediation.

AP04 inspections

In order to reuse soil as a building material, an AP04 study is necessary in The Netherlands. Due to the strict standard for PFAS, the reuse of soil has been stopped for a while in 2019. Due to the updated temporary action framework and the establishment of local guidelines by various environmental services, things have started moving again. We are happy to use our experience and knowledge about the latest developments in this field to help you move your soil.

Soil remediation

If an environmental soil investigation has shown that a location is seriously contaminated, a remediation plan must be drawn up. In a remediation plan, the most suitable remediation variant that emerged from the investigation is elaborated in detail. After completion of the remediation, the results are presented in a report. To ensure that soil remediation takes place quickly and efficiently, T&A brings together all the necessary parties. T&A also takes care of all communication with authorities.

Soil remediation in historical built environments

Remediation in a historical built environment requires many factors to be taken into account. For example the cultural history of a location or UXO from WWII. At T&A Survey, environmental, UXO and archaeological experts work together under one roof. That is why T&A is the ideal party to manage your remediation project in a historical built environment.

Asbestos research

Asbestos research is an important part of environmental soil research. Asbestos research begins with a historical study to identify possible sources of asbestos dispersal. If the historical research shows that a location has been exposed to asbestos, field research into asbestos in and on the soil will have to be carried out.

Visual inspection

Prior to the regular soil examination, the ground level of the suspect location is first visually inspected for suspect (asbestos) material. If suspect material is found during asbestos inspection, the soil will also have to be examined for asbestos. In case of soil containing debris, it will have to be investigated  for asbestos. These studies are based on NEN 5707 for soil and NEN 5798 for construction and demolition waste and recycling granulate.

Asbestos inventory of buildings

In case of an intended sale of land with real estate, In addition to asbestos soil research T&A offers the opportunity to have the buildings checked for asbestos.

Ecological research

Ecological research is concerned with the question whether vulnerable ecosystems (plants or animals) present in the research area that may be at risk because of the planned activities. To determine this, a nature test or flora & fauna quick scan is carried out.

The quick scan is an exploratory study to assess the risks based on existing literature and a field study. A nature test often follows a quick scan and is carried out according to national guidelines. The test determines the impact of the risks. It is then determined which protective or compensatory measures have to be taken. The granting of permits for the planned activities depends, among other things, on the outcome of the nature test.

Nitrogen Compensation

T&A conducts various soil investigations to determine the options for compensating nitrogen emissions. The compensation of nitrogen emissions can be done, for example, by developing new nature reserves or adapting existing ones. By defining the specific parameters over a longer period for each project, it becomes clear what is and what is not feasible.

Ecological remediation

Ecological remediation are the measures which have to be taken to restore or create a special nature reserve. The basic principle in ecological remediation is that the soil is the basis for the natural wealth of an area. Ecological soil remediation requires knowledge of the relevant ecological system, soil texture and soil hydrology. T&A specializes in combining classic remediation techniques with knowledge of the soil and the ecological system. A nature test or flora & fauna quick scan can provide an answer to the question whether there are vulnerable ecosystems (plants or animals) in the research area that may be at risk because of the planned works.

Consultants for environmental issues

T&A has all the expertise to steer the entire process of environmental soil research in the right direction. Our consultants think from you as a client to optimally represent your interests. The fieldwork is carried out by specialized fieldwork agencies that we have been working with for many years.

Project management

In construction projects, there is a growing demand to entrust the environmental aspects such as soil research, nature testing and asbestos research to one party. This party is responsible for the entire project management, from permit application to the completion of a new construction site. T&A Survey acts as the spider in the web for such projects. We are the direct contact point for the customer throughout the process.

Second opinion

In some cases it takes many years of research to determine the precise extent of soil contamination. Changing regulations can cause serious obstacles in business operations. New regulations may also prove that the original contamination is less serious. An independent, expert second opinion from T&A Survey can shed new light on the matter.

Legal support

T&A can provide the following legal services for environmental research:

  • support of the principal in legal permit and insurance issues on soil and groundwater pollution;
  • determine the effects of soil pollution on the regional building program;
  • advice on permits with respect to the relevant legislations on soil and  groundwater pollution.

Environmental survey projects

Environmental survey on the site of a former elevator factory

T&A has carried out an environmental contamination study at the site of a former elevator factory in Haarlem. The reason for the survey was the intended sale of the site, which required of the level of soil contamination to be established.

Exploratory soil survey for determining nitrogen compensation

T&A has carried out an exploratory soil survey in a nature reserve. The reason for the investigation was to determine the possible nitrogen compensation necessary as a result of the construction of new infrastructure elsewhere in the Netherlands. The nitrogen compensation consists of the development of new nature areas.

Mapping chloride groundwater contamination with NanoTEM

Mapping the horizontal and vertical distribution of contamination is a necessary part of environmental research. The purpose of this study was to identify a chloride contamination of the groundwater.
