Infrared (IR) thermography is a no-contact technique for measuring the surface temperature of a body or an object. By attaching a thermographic infrared camera to a drone, T&A Survey drone Services can detect temperature contrasts from the air, making it a particularly suitable technology for the inspection of solar pannels.
By flying over a solar park with a drone equipped with an infrared thermographic camera, a thermogram is made. This is a visual representation of the temperatures on the measured surfaces, different temperatures being represented by contrasting colours. Generally speaking, low temperatures are represented by dark colours and high temperatures by lighter shades. This way damaged solar cells can be detected and localised instantly.
IR thermography can also be used to detect heat leakages and overheating of high voltage towers or power stations, which often indicate damage eventually lead to failure of electrical and heat isolation. Other applications are the detection of fire sources and missing persons and security.
The best results with IR thermography are achieved when the difference in temperature between the research target and its surroundings is more than 10 degrees Celcius. This is why winter is the best period to perfom drone IR thermographic surveys.
